Miss World 1957
- an amalgam of news reports -

The new Miss World, a statuesque blonde who makes her living by taking care of people’s feet, gave some special attention to her own today.

Gray-green-eyed Marita Lindahl of Finland toed the line for the judges and walked off with the beauty title.

But not before she had been on her feet for a long time.

While the judges were surveying her classically lovely face, long golden hair and shapely legs, Miss Lindahl thought of her feet.

“They hurt,” she said. “I will now have to give them more attention.”

The 18-year-old Miss Finland, a pedicurist by profession, was the tallest and heaviest of the 23 girls in the competition.  She stands 5 feet 7 3/4, weighs 136 and is contoured, 37-23-37.

She was rewarded with a sports car and 500 pounds ($1,400).

Lilian Madsen, representing Denmark, won second place and 100 pounds ($280).  Miss South Africa, Adelle Kruger, was third and Miss Tunisia, Jacqueline Tapia, fourth.

The representatives of Japan, France and Israel were the other runners-up in that order.

Two days earlier, seven of the 23 contestants came down with Asian Flu.

The sneezing, coughing collection of international beauties - fussed over like a prize collection of ailing thoroughbreds on the eve of a big race - were bedded down in their hotel rooms.

Contest officials, deprived of almost a third of their finalists, brought in teams of doctors to help put the beauties back on their feet within the 48-hour deadline.

The other 16 contestants were taken out to spend the day absorbing some seaside air at Margate, an east coast resort.

Those with the flu are Miss Belgium, Miss Canada, Miss Denmark, Miss Iceland, Miss Ireland, Miss South Africa  and Miss U.S.A..

All the cases appeared mild.
