Miss World 1958
- an amalgam of news reports -

Penelope "Penny" Anne Coelen, a willowy, 18-year-old architect’s secretary from Durban, South Africa, was crowned Miss World of 1958.

Claudine Oger, 17-year-old student from Paris, won second place.  Vinnie Ingemann, 18-year-old dancer from Copenhagen, was third.

Nine judges including racing driver Stirling Moss picked the winner from among the six finalists.  She was a favorite all the way with the crowd.

She is 5 feet 7 1/2 inches tall, has hazel eyes and honey blond hair, and the rest goes 35-23-36.

Along with the title Penny won 500 pounds ($1,400), a beige sports car worth 700 pounds ($2,000) and contracts for personal appearances.  Her first contract was to appear in a TV shampoo advertisement.

Harriet Margaretha Wagstrom, 20-year-old Stockholm secretary, took fourth place.

Fifth was Miss Holland, Lucienne Struve, 19-year-old Rotterdam model, and sixth was Miss United Kingdom, 22-year-old London receptionist Eileen Sheridan.

The girls were judged for poise, and how they looked in evening gowns and bathing suits.

“I can’t believe it, I’m so happy,” said Penny when she got the nod.

As for the prize money, she said: “I’ll invest it in South African metal shares as soon as I get home.  I already have some of the shares, and I’d like to buy some more.  I’m not very interested in anything else.

“My father advises me on stocks and shares.  He believes in spending money wisely.”

Her hobbies are languages, sailing and tennis.  Her ambition, she said, is to see the world.
