Miss World 1960
- an amalgam
of news reports -
A 21-year-old
black-haired, brown-eyed beauty from Buenos Aires won the Miss World title.
She said that being a woman, she’d probably spend the prize money for
clothes. She also hoped to turn her Miss World title into a film career.
Norma Gladys
Cappagli, a professional model measuring 36-23-36, was chosen over girls
representing 38 other countries. “I’m just too astonished, and so, so
happy,” she gasped, blinking into the flash bulbs of photographers.
As first prize Miss
Cappagli, a model, received 500 pounds ($1,400) and a blue and white sports
car, but that was only the beginning. “Winning the contest can earl a girl
10,000 pounds ($28,000) in all the advertising and extras,” a contest
official explained.
Second place went
to war orphan Gila Golan, 20, who was born in Poland but taken to Israel
during the war. She competed as Miss Israel. She got a sports car and
$280.
Third was Miss
South Africa, who received $210.
Fourth, Miss
Germany, who got $168.
Fifth, Miss United
States, who got $140. Judith Ann Achter, 18, of St. Louis, Mo., said that
she thought the Miss World contest was more exciting than the American
presidential election held on the same day. She said one of the reasons was
that she is too young to vote. |
