Amina Lawal was a single mother condemned to death in March 2002 by Muslim leaders in Nigeria for sex outside marriage.  Charges were not brought against the father because there were no "witnesses" to the "fornication."  On 2003 September 25, the Shariah Court of Appeal overturned Lawal's conviction.

Contestants at a welcoming ceremony on November 11, after arrival in Abuja, Nigeria.  Eleven countries boycotted the pageant as a protest over the Amina Lawal affair.
