The only American contestant - Tally Richards, 24, of New York City -
emerged from the Miss World beauty contest here an also-ran.
The judges
passed over Miss Richards’ 36-inch bust, 24-inch waist and 37-inch
hips to award the global title to May-Louise Flodin, 20-year-old Miss
Sweden.
Boos and
catcalls greeted the announcement of the winner, and disclosure that the
decision was not unanimous only added to the outcry. The Swedish brunette
herself appeared surprised at winning.
The crowd’s
favorite appeared to be Vera Marks, Miss Germany, who placed third. Sylvia
Muller, Miss Switzerland, was second, and Eva Hellas, Miss Finland,
fourth.
The winner’s
measurements were 34-inch bust, 23-inch waist and 36-inch hips.
Prior to the
contest, the international rivals took a 10-day tour of the British Isles.
The judges
were actor Richard Todd and actresses Petula Clark and Glynnis Johns. The
contest was sponsored by a London Sunday newspaper and a dance hall chain.
