Miss World 1969
- an amalgam of news reports -

Miss Austria, 20-year-old blonde model Eva Rueber-Staier, was crowned Miss World 1969.

At 36-23-36, five foot eight inches tall and 122 pounds, she was also a favorite among contestant chaperones for the crown.

“We all like Eva,” said one chaperone.  “She had that kind of demure good looks - that was a nice change from the usual voluptuous beauty queens.”

The blue-eyed, blonde photographic model was crowned by Egyptian actor Omar Sharif.

The doll-faced Miss Austria, wearing a cutaway striped swimsuit, sat on the winner’s throne before a giant tinseled ball symbolizing the world.

She won $6,000 and a chance of picking up about $72,000 in modeling fees and endorsements as the most gorgeous girl in the world.

Miss United States, Gail Renshaw, a 22-year-old accountant from Arlington, Va., was second.  She picked up $1,200 for second place.

Miss Renshaw, clad in a sapphire-blue swimsuit, gasped when she was named runner-up and brushed a tear from her eye.  The contest official who crowned her had trouble fitting the tiara over her long frosted hair.  She took it from him and with shaking hands arranged it herself.

Miss Germany, Christa Margraf, a copper blonde-haired student with a dimpled chin, was third.

Schoolteacher Pamela Lord of Guyana, 24, was fourth.  Miss Venezuela, Marcia Rita Piazza, a dazzling 18-year-old model, fifth.

As the girls paraded across the silver-tinselled stage before a cheering crowd of 5,000 about 40 feminists demonstrated outside Albert Hall, where the contest was held, denouncing beauty competitions as harmful to womankind.

Anti-apartheid demonstrators also were on hand to protest participation of South Africa’s Linda Meryl Collett in the contest.
