Miss World 1972
- an amalgam
of news reports -
Honey blonde
Belinda Roman Green of Australia began her reign as Miss World 1972 by
trying to find out where in London she can buy 52 boomerangs - one for each
of the contestants she defeated.
The new Miss World,
who measures 34-24-34, said: “I didn’t think I would win.”
She is 5
feet 7 inches tall and weights 116 pounds.
The 20-year-old
photographic model from North Carlton was crowned in the finale of the 22nd
annual contest televised from the Royal Albert Hall. She smiled through
tears as the diamond studded crown was placed on her head.
She said that she
didn’t know what she would do with her $7,050 in prize money. “First of all
I have got to buy boomerangs for all my fellow contestants and they all
asked me for one,” she said. “But I don’t know where I can buy them over
here.”
Miss Norway,
Ingeborg Sorensen, 24, of Oslo, was second; Miss Israel, Chana Ordan, 17, of
Tel Aviv, third; Miss Austria, Ursula Pacher, 21, of Klagenfurt, fourth, and
Miss India, Malathi Basappa, 21, of Bangalore, fifth.
The other two
finalists were Miss Finland, Anneli Bjorkling, 20, of Helsinki, and Miss
United Kingdom, Jenny McAdam, 24, of London.
Miss World was
crowned and given her ermine robe and handed her scepter by Sir James
Carreras, chairman of the international board of the Variety Clubs.
Proceeds from the 22-year-old pageant go to the Variety Club of Great
Britain’s children’s fund.
Miss World of 1971,
Lucia Petterle of Brazil, said a broken arm kept her from crowning Miss
World of 1973.
“The X rays show my
fracture hasn’t healed enough to take the cast off, and the doctor told me
the cold London weather would not be good for it,” Lucia Petterle said in
Rio de Janeiro.
She fractured her
left arm two months ago when she fell off a 12-foot ladder while filming a
television show. |
