Miss World 1982
- an amalgam of news reports -

The new Miss World, Mariasela Alvarez Lebrun of the Dominican Republic, began her one-year reign in joy and disbelief at a coronation ball that lasted until the early hours of the morning.

More than 1,000 people, including the 68 contestants, packed the Great Room of London’s Grosvenor Hotel for the dinner and dancing hosted by the beauty pageant’s organizers.

Earlier, at the Royal Albert Hall, Miss Alvarez Lebrun, the daughter of a university professor, beat 67 other national beauty queens to win the coveted contest and prizes worth more than $48,000.

“I hope now I can put my country on the map,” said Miss Alvarez Lebrun, 22, after defeating 67 other contestants for the title.

“I am so surprised,” she said, wiping away a tear with one hand and steadying her crown with the other.  “It is the first time a girl from my country has ever won the title.  I feel it is a great honor.”

Miss Alvarez Lebrun, a brunette, had come to London as a tourist after vacationing in Poland, Greece, Austria, Italy, Germany, Spain and in Latin America.

London bookies at first made her a 20-1 long shot, although her odds later improved to 10-1 before the contest began.

But the 5-foot-10 architecture student emerged the winner, knocking out the bookies’ favorite, Miss Trinidad, Althea Ingrid Rocke, 22, who did not place.

In second place in the contest was Miss Finland, 20-year-old model Sari Kaarina Apsholm, and third place went to the local favourite, 20-year-old Della Dolan, of the United Kingdom.

The new Miss World was crowned by last year’s winner, Pilin Leon of Venezuela.

The brown-eyed Miss Alvarez Lebrun, whose interests include singing, ballet, gymnastics and volleyball, won about $49,000 in prizes, including a $8,000 cash prize and a $41,000 modeling contract.

Miss Alvarez Lebrun speaks little English, but her victory also gives her a screen test with the executive producer of “Chariots of Fire,” Dodi Fayed, for an upcoming movie.

She did not receive the traditional fur coat, as animal rights advocates protested loudly about the prize in the past.

There was heavy security at the Royal Albert Hall for the contest amid fears the environmentalists would disrupt the proceedings as they did a recent televised beauty contest in Britain.

The new strapless bathing suit the contestants were required to wear angered Miss U.S.A., Luann Cauchey, 23, a blonde from Dallas, Texas.

She thought the suit was too revealing and was unhappy that she had to wear it for the photographers.  “I’m being exploited,” said the beauty queen who lifts weights in her spare time.

The contest was also marked by charges of racism.  Miss Zimbabwe charged the organizers with racism, claiming she had been pushed out of photo sessions by other contestants.
