Miss World 1983
- an amalgam
of news reports -
British fashion model Sarah-Jane Hutt started her one-year reign as the new
Miss World modestly denying she was the world’s most beautiful woman - and
some disgruntled competitors agreed.
“She was not the prettiest girl, we all think the judges were wrong,” said
unplaced Miss Barbados, Nina McIntosh-Clarke, 24.
Press Association, the British domestic news agency, reported that Miss
Jamaica, Catherine Levy, 21, who placed fourth, was so angry about not
winning that she refused to attend the coronation ball after the televised
contest.
But Miss Hutt, a 19-year-old brown-eyed brunette, was all smiles this
morning, when, after dancing into the early hours at London’s Grosvenor
Hotel, she appeared at a morning photo-call.
Asked by reporters if she was “the most beautiful girl in the world,” Miss
Hutt simply answered, “No.”
Princess Margaret greeted the winner during a post-midnight ball that
followed the contest. More than 1,000 people, including the other 71 Miss
World competitors, gathered to dance and celebrate into the early hours.
Miss Colombia, 18-year-old medical student Rocio Florenz, finished second
while Miss Brazil, Catia Pedrosa, 20, a psychology student, rated by
bookmakers as a 33-1 long shot, placed third.
The others among the seven finalists were Miss United States, Lisa Allred of
Fort Worth, Texas; Marissa Burgos Canallas of Panama; Unnur Steinsson of
Iceland and Catherine Levy of Jamaica.
A
television audience estimated by organizers at 500 million watched the
contest live by satellite.
Miss Hutt was crowned Miss World to thunderous applause in London’s Royal
Albert Hall.
Miss Hutt, the favorite in the 33rd Miss World Beauty Pageant and the first
Briton to win the contest in 18 years, was chosen over young women from 71
other countries.
“I
feel fantastic - I never thought I would win even though I was the
favorite,” Miss Hutt, the first Briton to win the title in 18 years, told
reporters. She is the fourth Briton to win the title in the contest’s
33-year history.
Miss Hutt topped the bookmakers’ list of favorites throughout the two weeks
the contenders were here. Tipsters put her early success down to British
bettors’ patriotism.
Miss Hutt’s winner’s prize was a check for 5,000 pounds, or $7,500, and a
year-long contract worth 25,000 pounds, or $37,500, with the Miss World
organization to promote clothes, products and the Variety Club children’s
charity around the world. Miss Florenz received 2,000 pounds, or $3,000,
and Miss Pedrosa’s prize was 1,000 pounds or $1,500. |
