Miss World 1984
- an amalgam of news reports -

The new Miss World, Venezuela’s Astrid Herrera Irazabal, mingled with royalty at a victory ball while contest organizers fended off criticism from animal rights groups over her links to a South American bull-baiting game.

The 21-year-old 5-foot-8 brown-eyed brunette psychology student won the title and a cash prize of $37,500 from among 72 contestants.

She  was feted at a ball where she met Princess Margaret, the princess’ 23-year-old bachelor son Viscount Linley, and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s 31-year-old bachelor son Mark.

Miss Herrera was crowned before a television audience estimated at 20 million, who watched the contest live by satellite.

She also was named winner of the Americas Queen of Beauty trophy, one of five continental prizes first awarded in 1981.

The other continental queens of beauty were: Miss England Vivienne Rooke, 22, for Europe; Nairobi’s Khadifa Adam Ismail, 24, for Africa; Australia’s Lou-Anne Ronchi, 22, for Oceania, and Israel’s Iris Louk, 18, for Asia.

The contestants were judged on personality in interviews with the organizers, led by Eric Morley, before walking on stage to be assessed for looks.

The controversy at the 34th annual beauty pageant arose over Miss Venezuela’s role as the official pin-up girl in her home city Caracas for the game “coleos.”

In the sport, young bulls are chased into a narrow corral by men on horseback who attempt to roll the bulls onto their backs.  The animals are gripped by the tails to throw them off their feet and sometimes end up with broken legs, dislocated hips or no tails.

Shortly before the contest at London’s Royal Albert Hall, about 30 animal rights activists demonstrated outside.  Their banners included one reading: “Bullfighting Miss Venezuela get out.”

The first runner-up in the pageant was Miss Canada, Connie Fitzpatrick, 20, a blonde, hazel-eyed student from Ontario.  Miss Australia, Lou-Anne Caroline Ronchi, 22, won third place.

Miss United States, sales supervisor Kelly Lea Anderson, 23, of Clarksburg, W. Va., emerged as a favorite in last-minute betting, and was among the seven finalists.
