Miss World 1990
- an amalgam
of news reports -
Miss United States, Gina Marie Tolleson enjoyed a champagne breakfast and
attention from the media after being crowned Miss World in London.
Ms. Tolleson didn’t let a little thing like the flu stop her from
competing. “I felt so bad during dress rehearsal that I had to get off
stage and all I could do was pray I would be OK,” she said about her flu,
which apparently was brought on by the London weather.
The brown-haired, brown-eyed Ms. Tolleson, who is six feet tall, was crowned
at the 40th annual Miss World beauty contest by last year’s winner, Aneta
Kreglicka of Poland.
Ms. Tolleson, who said she hopes to work in broadcast journalism after
finishing her studies, is trained in ballet, jazz and tap dancing. Her
hobbies include horse riding and gardening.
She won $19,000 in cash and a work contract worth $59,000.
The 21-year-old University of Georgia sophomore told reporters she would use
the money to pay for a Jeep Cherokee she recently bought, do a little
shopping and “just sit on” the rest.
First, she said, she would get some sleep.
“I’m just resting the rest of the day, catching up on my beauty sleep which
I desperately need.”
She said she and her mother called her father back home in Spartanburg,
S.C., before she went to bed after the contest.
First RU was Miss Ireland, 20-year-old air stewardess Siobhan McClafferty. Miss Venezuela, 19-year-old dance teacher Sharon Raquel Luengo
Gonzales, was third. A panel of judges made the selection.
The contest at the London Palladium was watched live by a worldwide
television audience of 500 million, the organizers said. |
